In the ongoing effort to put stuff somewhere and have everyone on the homenet be able to find it I have once again took the dive into media servers. Plex seems the most worked on and mature of the bunch. I have a test server up, pumped in some directories for it to chew on, and put the clients on the GooleTV box, the droids and a few laptops. So far aside for the need to muck with transcoding issues it seems pretty nice. Has anyone else had experience with this app?

The other piece of tech I got to play with this weekend was something I picked up for the family living room…The Sony NSZ-GT1 bluray player and GoogleTV combo. On the surface, like the Kindle Fire, it is very much for the consumer crowd. Once you get a few more apps on it though the thing really open up. The only real limiting factors on what Android apps you can run are the slightly different flavor of the OS GoogleTv uses and the Intel chip inside.

Setup..a breeze. The controller is something the boys and I took to immediately. The stock apps are ok but given about an hour hunting about for others to load in and we were really cooking with a full head of steam. All the media (music, movies, videos, photos) around the house net was available to stream or move over to the device. One of the stock apps tied us into our Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts to include all those videos. Google Music was there ready to offer me all the music I had in its cloud. Bingo bango…oh and it plays Bluray discs, so there is that added bonus for the house.

Downsides…Hulu+ and a few other sites have said "No Soup For You GoogleTV" and so I am saying "No Money For You". Our Hulu+ account is going off in a month or two.

Other downsides…some of the games the kids like to play on their refurbed Droid 1s wont work on the device…so no Angry Birds until there is a port.

Upsides, the built in Chrome Browser works on every damn web site the kids and adults use (except for places like Hulu+ that are blocking the goodies). PBS kids, Armor Games, Youtube (or YogsTube as the kids call it) etc etc…all work.

Downsides…No camera is found to work with it yet so no Google Hangouts or Skype.

Bottom line, we got a damn good price on it and it has worked a charm in making all our media around the housenet and in the cloud just work on the big screen in the living room. Not only that most everyone in the house was able to navigate to what they wanted, be it a movie, song , website or app, with very little difficulty. We had been using WiiMC on our Homebrewed Wii, this though is far better.

I got the chance today to set up a Kindle Fire for someone…..For the price it is a damn solid tablet. Amazon certinaly did spin thier own experience, thankfully with a click of a button in the system menu you can turn on the ability to add other apks. The ones you can get right from Amazon App Store are good for most things, sideloading on gmail, greader and more choices for ebook reading make the device mucho better.

The feel of the device is crisp, the screen reponds fast and the built in speakers are workable.

The default home screen set up would drive me nuts but the intended audience for this device will love it. I checked and LauncherPro can be sideloaded, so if you wanted you can change the look and setup. I also hear Cyanogen is being worked on for the device so for those who like to take total control will be able.

Device owners get a free month of Amazon Prime, which they have made as easy to use as breathing on the device. Apple is no longer alone with a One Ring Device:)-

Drawbacks….No sd slot, no camera, no mic…the damn thing has exactly 1 button (off/on) a usb/power port and a heaphone jack…that is all. So if you are looking to skype, gtalk, hangout or sip/voip you are, as far as I can tell, sol. Memory wise once you use up the 8gb of on board you are sol…but hey Amazon makes living in the clouds so damn attractive…also there are apps that will let you stream from your homenet…so yeah 8gb and then little fluffy clouds.

All in all I would have to say for the sub 200 tablet market this is a damn fine purchase. Personaly I would wait for Cyanogen to come out for it, but if you are in for the "Amazon Experience" or if you are ok with sideloading apps (an easy task) then you are all set.
