I got the chance today to set up a Kindle Fire for someone…..For the price it is a damn solid tablet. Amazon certinaly did spin thier own experience, thankfully with a click of a button in the system menu you can turn on the ability to add other apks. The ones you can get right from Amazon App Store are good for most things, sideloading on gmail, greader and more choices for ebook reading make the device mucho better.

The feel of the device is crisp, the screen reponds fast and the built in speakers are workable.

The default home screen set up would drive me nuts but the intended audience for this device will love it. I checked and LauncherPro can be sideloaded, so if you wanted you can change the look and setup. I also hear Cyanogen is being worked on for the device so for those who like to take total control will be able.

Device owners get a free month of Amazon Prime, which they have made as easy to use as breathing on the device. Apple is no longer alone with a One Ring Device:)-

Drawbacks….No sd slot, no camera, no mic…the damn thing has exactly 1 button (off/on) a usb/power port and a heaphone jack…that is all. So if you are looking to skype, gtalk, hangout or sip/voip you are, as far as I can tell, sol. Memory wise once you use up the 8gb of on board you are sol…but hey Amazon makes living in the clouds so damn attractive…also there are apps that will let you stream from your homenet…so yeah 8gb and then little fluffy clouds.

All in all I would have to say for the sub 200 tablet market this is a damn fine purchase. Personaly I would wait for Cyanogen to come out for it, but if you are in for the "Amazon Experience" or if you are ok with sideloading apps (an easy task) then you are all set.
