Opening up your wifi, when done right, makes for many a great notions. Portland's Personal Telco Project (http://map.personaltelco.net/) has been walking this talk since the early '00s. The  open Wireless Router project is planning on offering a common  router firmware that "will be security-audited and allow users to check for updates on the devices’ smartphone-friendly web interface and quickly download updates."
It is something worth a look at at least.Â
