Is this yet another sign I am falling our of synch with the now? Much as with my food choices  I like my data as close to unprocessed by others as possible.  RSS feeds, client side  presentation only …thanks. Which is why when Reader went away I went back to a tool that grabs the raw feeds and does a little dressing up so I can read it easier than in its markup nudeness. Email, I recently starting moving over to K9 on my hand held devices. Spam filters I still  rely on server sidedness but even that I am thinking about taking back.  Chat, oh IRC I love ye after all these years. Â
Google moving to a more processed model only makes me  want to move my data  flow further away from it.Â
Sticking points are still social networking and collab storage.
Among  those of a particular tech bent it is easier to live without the products  but with everyone else it is hard enough steering clear of Frackbook and MS/Apple.
Gmail represents a dying class of products that, like Google Reader, puts control in the hands of users, not signal-harvesting algorithms.
