] Adventures In Learning part 23 1/2 [
Over the last months my 9 year old has been home with us more so than in class, this is just how things pan out when trying to deal with the Asperger's and the local school system. In the last two months his in school time is down to an hour or two a day after regular classes are over…so the task at hand each day is always to get him edumicatedlike in a way he can work with. To that end we have played all manner of Minecraft and in so doing have learned maths, some history, a bit of storytelling and oddly he has had to learn to be an effective public speaker as his advocacy for the game's usefulness has led him into the principal's office ..yea he pitched making a school server…the outcome is still pending.
Once of the vectors I have been trying to work on is language skills. He is an avid reader but I have always held that learning how languages work is a very effective way to learn how to work a language for all it is worth. A few years back I came across the Minimus Mouse books (http://www.minimus-etc.co.uk/ ), two compact books that make Latin accessible to kids. We have had on again off again results with it. Today, as we explored the shelves of the Tattered Cover bookstore we came across a Getting Started in Latin book/cd package for a not unreasonable price. While not as kid friendly as the Minimus Mouse works it is set up in a manner that builds on rather than piles on the learning.
My goal is to be able to replace the English language text in Minecraft, including menus, signs, etc, with Latin…maybe have us build a Latin centered adventure . Yes..all roads lead to Minecraft…and thank Bob for that one vector I know still works:)-
As with all my best laid plans of learning time will tell if it sticks or gets stuck.

Early morning book hounds no. 12 & 35
Years ago when I was with the PTP(http://www.personaltelco.net) the idea floated about for local content on our servers/hot spots. Even without a connection to the intertubes some of our servers offered the local users a nice Debian mirror, some free and oss items and on a few toyed around with using bon jour/zeroconf/insertwhateveritsbeingcallednow to show what users on the local net had open for sharing. It was great when folks had a little sumtinsumtin to share with those around them, made for some nice examples of the familar stranger effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Familiar_stranger)
This project speaks to that idea, of a localized bit of sharing that could with use build up confederations of familiar strangers. This variant of the project requires an old rooted android phone, some free app, and a place to be. Their default SSID might not be the best for general use but it does capture the mood nicely. I have an old DroidOG with a busted screen that wold be perfect for this.
