File under Share Global….. FidoNet

It was done before…bit by bit over gateways and mediums. History teaches us that there are ways around, under and through. FidoNet makes me smile.
"FidoNet was started in the early 1980's by Tom Jennings in San Francisco, California and some friends of his who lived in Baltimore, Maryland. Initially, communications consisted of simple messages going back and forth between these systems. Tom's Fido software was the next step in allowing a BBS (Bulletin Board System) to exist in the network. At FidoNet's peak in the 1990's, some 30,000 systems communicated worldwide in the FidoNet network. "

File under Share Community…….Community Wireless Networks.

Share your network, share your resources, share your knowing….any and all of that fits nicely into the ideas that went into the foundation of the Personal Telco Project. Way back in 2002 the PTP put a open community wifi hotspot/node in the heart of Portland's downtown, a place called Pioneer Square, and it is still serving the community today.

Building a local community wireless network has never been easier. The routers have come way down in price and way way up in ability. You could easily set up a 20-30 $ device on your existing home network and share a little or a lot of your internet connection and/or local resources. Groups like the PTP exist in part to help you with setting up such a thing, answering questions on how best to keep it running and to let you share your newfound knowing with others just starting out. Look around for a group in your neck of the woods (http://freenetworks.org/)

How do we keep the free and open exchange of ideas and awesomesauce going even if the Feds come a cracking down the party? BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!! How… there are a ton of simple ways to start sharing both locally and globally. I want folks to think beyond SOPA/PIPA and share the ways you can keep the bounty of the shareocracy alive.

Here is one idea to file under share local….and you do not need the fancy lunch box…heck an old router with a usb drive hanging off it would do nicely… I have an old Droid1 that is being worked on to do the do.
