I loves me my Wagner, maybe not as much as Stephen Fry or +Andrew Higgins but still it is a long time love of mine. I saw the Ring done up at the MET early on in its run, I got to see the set actually fall apart at the end of Götterdämmerung..and not in a healthy way. So it is with much interest I saw this come across my Listen feed.

Hey Denver…look who is following our family to Denver…not just Trader Joes but also…possibly. Voodoo Doughnuts. I think they miss us.

Since Portland-based Voodoo Doughnut first sprung onto the scene in 2003, it has become an international phenomenon: The place, owned…

To all the talk of revolution in books, text books and reading from the Apple corp…..to paraphrase Chuck D ….yeah ill check out the format….but it will take an open one to move me. The past few decades are example enough for me of the ills of closed proprietary formats and corps how innovate by lawsuit.

The textbook industry is slimey enough as it is without the inclusion of the digibarons locking it down even worse. Selling out the future of an open and enriching education for pretty baubles and brand loyalty fanaticism is not a wise road to venture down. Let us see what is being offered.

Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/19/apples-ibooks-author-hands-on/) has a nice review of the iBooks Author app..you can include text, multimedia…I have heard about mixed media being done before though so as innovations go..yeah not so much. So what is new here about self publishing multimedia works?

"Apple confirmed to us that you can publish classroom materials for free and that each book will be approved in the same way that the App store approvals process works. Copyrighted works (if you utilize any) will have to be strictly cited and referenced in order to pass muster. You'll be able to publish books for free, all the way up to $14.99: with a fixed profit-share model of 70/30 between yourself and Cupertino. Most importantly of all, any book that you publish must be an exclusive to iBooks"

Yeah.

Yes I know that was a long string of posts…but hey…I am up late and I have a thought in my head about something I care about. The Internet…networking…communications. I know some of you are either new to the game or are of the ilk that once made fun of folks who were into such things long before it was mass market shinny and consumer cool….yes you know who you are…stop buying new barns in Farmville/ spouting on about how the TSA makes us safe for a moment and read some of the SOPA posts.

Learn a little bit about the history of where you are, what you are participating in each time you send a packet over the magical intertubes and some of the ideas that helped make things what they are today. It is a beautiful world we live in, one worth taking a moment out every now and again to learn the hows and whys … and maybe the ways to keep it strong and useful and open.

"This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box." Edward R Murrow

Good night…and good luck.
